Within the first stage of action A2 (January 2002-September 2002)  the following activities took place:

1. Intensive communications  between the Working Group at Technical University of Gabrovo (TUGAB WG) and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Working Group (BAS WG) have been performed aiming at detailed study of the state of research and form of  education in the two co-partners. The status of CSE research and education in TU-Gabrovo have been discussed. Suitable models  for the introduction of CSE master courses in TU Gabrovo have been considered.

2. Specification of the equipment for the CSE-server at student lab have been investigated. The suitable company offering this equipment have been selected. The company “LIREX-BG” offers  to cancel  VAT taxes. A server machine Pentium-4, 1.6GH with 1GB RAM is proposed.

3. Different materials, mainly books, related to the aims of the project have been supplied.

4. For successful extending of CSE implementation it is necessary to make the faculty better acquainted with the capabilities of modern CSE-systems. We applied for financial support by the University Scientific Fund and the Project “The use of computer algebra systems in teaching students in technical universities” was approved. The goal of this satellite project is to make TU-Gabrovo faculty more familiar with Maple and MATLAB.

5. The Maple system have been used in scientific research if the area of Coding Theory and new results have been obtained:

[1] R. Daskalov, “Construction of one-generator quasi-cyclic and quasi-twisted codes over small fields”.

6. The undergraduate students at TU-Gabrovo attend various courses in mathematics and mechanics. In some of these subjects computing tools for Computational Science and Engineering are partially used.

6.1. All second year students (about 300) in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Electronics have 15 hours laboratory tutorials in mathematics. The following topics are included:

1.     Complex numbers. Polynomials.

2.     Matrices. Linear systems.

3.     Curves and surfaces of second order.

4.     Limits. Derivatives. Graph of function.

5.     Integrals. Applications.

6.     Number and power series. Taylor series.

7.     Fourier series. Laplace transformations.

Currently these lab tutorials are based on Derive.  During the report period the conversion to using Maple was started.

6.2. All second year students (about 200) in the Faculty of Mechanical and Precision Engineering attend 15 hours laboratory tutorials in mechanics. The topics included are:

1.     Rectilinear motion of a particle.

2.     Plane motion of a particle.

3.     Rotational motion of a body.

4.     Theorem of kinetic energy.

5.     Lagrange equations of motion of mechanical systems.

Currently these lab tutorials are based on MATLAB 4.2 with Extended Symbolic Toolbox. During the report period the programs were updated to work with MATLAB 6.
